Originally established years and years ago as protectors of peace, they've more or less become jackasses behind a shield (badge). Though it's always been this way, since the dawn of time...the old-time guards of warlords, emperors and kings being some of the first and now your modern day police officer and maybe your military troop. You have someone who desires power, but not the power to take over something...rather to dominate, control and manipulate...use rights given to him based on that power, that authority awarded.
Guards used it long ago to abuse the peasants and find reasons to have them imprisoned or executed...whether or not these occurences were real. Since evidence mattered less back then, it was all based on word of the Guard...if they say a peasant did something, apparently they did it. Now this wasn't the case for all guards, as some actually had a sense of justice but many others were supremicists and viewed the uniform as their right to rule others (because they could not become King).
Police officers, in a similar manner, are not allowed to use as much extreme measures as someone hundreds of years ago (for example, immediate use of lethal force...) due to a strict law system but rather they will plant evidence based on whether or not they can reach their "quota". Which in all reality, is sad as can be...someone that may never do drugs suddenly has a pound of hash in their trunk that apparently a cop discovered hiding back there. And it's really mixed here...you have your honor bound cops that hold up the law and won't really cut people a break, they're waaaaaay too much up in the Justice-drug that they won't let anything slide. Then there's your justice-bound cop with a sense of understanding, they'll cut you breaks and will be friendly...these are good cops but there are so few nowadays...then there's your jackass cops that will pull you over for not stopping fully at a red light before turning right (even though nobody else is around), but they're just plain dipshits...they'll take 5 years to do information on you and after they're done, they don't cut you any slack for it.
After all of those, you get two more categories. The worst ones...your bad cops that get into the wrong kind of stuff, they'll be corrupt and deal with druglords and get money on the side. They're very dirty and may kill you if you displease them (depending on the situation, if you're out in the middle of the desert or something...then yeah). And of course, finally...though actually better than the previous one, you have your ASSHOLE cops. Jackass and Assholes are different, Assholes will throw the law in your face and do just about whatever they like, plant evidence, smack you around (and claim you resisted), prevoke you INTO resisting so they have a reason to hurt you, pull a gun on you, threaten you, treat you rudely and above all else come across as that mean bully who always wanted a badge that would ALLOW him to bully others.
What I'm saying is I'm tired of it, and it's typically the last two that will cut other cops a huge break...like my wife's grandfather. He's an ex-sherriff, whom from what he says and how he acts...is between a Jackass and Asshole cop. Well he got in an accident recently, banged up another car and ruined his front end...flattened the left front tire and then he drove off, still drunk...back home. A cop showed up and knew him, so he brought him to jail and kept him there less than 6 hours before letting him go (even though there was a 1,300 bail...but the judge gave it 10 percent freedom, thus the actual bail turning up around 130. Even though that was never paid...). Now naturally he should have had some prevention on his license, hit and run plus drunk driving and then endangerment of others by continuing driving home? Nah, nothing...still has his license and is still driving the wrecked up van (with a replaced tire, big deal...).
Now when other police officers decide to just say it's ok for one of their own to do whatever and get away with it in some way, you know for certain the system is beyond corrupt. I can't trust in law enforcement...and it will never change, there's nothing to change it...as long as there are assholes who can get a badge out there, this will happen.
